Using Your Favorite Things To Keep Centered





Summer is over, the holidays are beginning, and I'm already exhausted. I refuse to be tired and in a bad mood during the holiday season... again. Self-care is one of my favorite soap boxes to stand on, so I have made a list of my favorite things that help me cope. Each day I accomplish or enjoy at least one of my favorite things because life is too short to live it pissed off.

So, here I go channeling my inner Julie Andrews to come up with my List of Favorite Things. And, without a doubt, I'm not sewing clothes out of curtains. I'll try these instead:


1) Taking a nap

I LOVE naps! I need to live in a country with a daily siesta time, but, alas, I do not. Instead, I have a full-time job as well as part-time jobs and volunteer positions, so daily naps are not an option. But on Sundays, napping I will be!

2)  Reading

Mental escape is awesome. I love to bury myself in a good book. While reading, I don't have to think about all the crap in my own world, and I get to escape into someone else's story. It is a quick mental vacation, sometimes with a bit of steamy sex thrown in... depends on which book I pick up.

3) Netflix

All I can say is "Netflix and chill." No, the literal version of that. I like mindless "dude" movies or good documentaries, where I can learn something and become a better trivia player.

4) Drinking

Alcohol is good. A glass of wine or a cocktail. When life jumps the rails, a good drink can make me happy. When I'm enjoying my favorite drink, I'm doing just that, enjoying it. Feet kicked up, drink in hand, smile on my face - life just becomes a bit better.

5) Calling my best friend

A good laugh/cry/bitch session always makes life better. Best friends get each other through the tough times. These are the people to whom you don't have to tell the backstory; you can just call and scream. They will understand.

6) Sex

I like it, I love it, and I want some more of it! Sex brings me back to my center. It's fun, it's hot, it's sweet, it's slow, it's hard, it's fast, and it makes me smile. So I try to enjoy this favorite thing as often as possible... plus, it makes the hubs happy too!

7) Cooking

In the last 4 years of my crazy life, I just don't have time to cook. I'm lucky to cook one meal per week, but cooking relaxes me. I love when my family enjoys my cooking. It makes me happy. Plus, food is my favorite!

8) Running

I haven't run in almost a year, and my body and mind miss it. Running is one of my favorite things, and it gets me out of the house and requires focus.

9) Laughing

I am talking about deep, strong belly laughing. I don't think any of us laugh enough. I want to look at things and burst out laughing. I want to talk to people and make them laugh. Laughter is amazing and, after I'm done - no matter how bad the rest of the day is - I feel better.

10) Praying

Prayer is my own personal quiet time, away from everyone, including myself. This is my time where the world goes away, and God and I do our thing. There is no right way or wrong way to pray.

11) Going to the beach

I don't think I even have to explain this one. The beach is it for me. Whether I'm there with family, friends, or alone it never lets me down. It is the ultimate "stop and take a deep breath spot." Plus, vitamin D! It's science!

Julie Andrews said to remember our favorite things. Not only am I going to remember them, but I am also going to accomplish them. At least once a day. Because I'm done being pissed. Make your list. I dare you. Life's so short, and I want to enjoy it. I hope you do too!
