5 Powerful, Kick-Ass Women in the World Today

We at UJ are all about lifting up women and celebrating the successes of all women. The following is a list of 5 totally amazing women that we are so proud of and we can all look up to. Help us celebrate these crazy-powerful, amazing women! Which one is your hero?

1.  Angela Merkel - Germany.  Angela Merkel is the single most powerful woman in the world for a decade and counting. Why, you ask? Ms. Merkel has a Masters of Science and a Doctorate from Leipzig University. She is the longest serving EU head of state, currently in the middle of her 3rd 4-year term. Wow! Accomplishments under belt: Keeping her country financially sound during the most recent economic crisis; helping Greece rebuild its economy; fighting ISIS; sending arms to aid Kurdish forces (which has been a taboo for German military since the fall of the Nazi party); and has been working hard to come to a peace agreement with Vladimir Putin of Russia. I mean, when is this woman NOT being a total badass?!

2.  Hillary Clinton - USA.  Hillary Clinton. Just say her name and you will elicit a plethora of reactions! She is a huge name in American Politics. She is paving the way for women in US politics - an area in which the United States is sorely behind compared to most of the developed world.  Whether you like her or not, she is a very powerful and intelligent woman. Clinton has a Bachelors of Arts and Science degree from Wellesley College and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Yale University. She was the First Lady of the United States from 1993-2001. She is the only woman to be a United States Senator AND a presidential candidate. She served as the United States Secretary of State from 2009-2013. She remains a popular and divisive politician in our country. We think she's a total badass - love her or hate her.

3.  Melinda Gates - USA.  Melinda Gates makes our list of totally kick-ass women. She is an incredible philanthropist and has used her substantial wealth to better other people's lives and to make the world a better place. Ms. Gates has a Bachelors of Arts and Science from Duke University and a Master of Business Administration from the Fuqua School of Business. She founded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000 with her husband Bill Gates. They gave $3.9 BILLION dollars in 2014 and have given over $33 BILLION dollars in grants since the inception of their foundation. Melinda oversees the foundation. She analyzes the data and decides the direction the foundation goes.  She has been concentrating her most recent efforts to champion investments in women and girls worldwide. Melinda Gates kicks serious ass. Serious ass.

4.  Janet Yellen - USA.  Janet Yellen is the first ever female head of the US Federal Reserve. She took over just as the banks were starting to recover from the recession, and she has navigated the markets through six cuts and gotten the monthly spending bill down to $0 per month from a height of $85 billion. That is some incredible work! With a word from her, assets prices can go anywhere! She is currently working to tighten federal oversight of big banks. Janet Yellen has a Bachelors of Arts and Science from Brown University and a Doctorate from Yale University. Ms. Yellen is in big money and kicking ass!

5.  Sheryl Sandberg - USA.  Sheryl Sandberg is currently a COO of Facebook and a former Google employee. She is a self-made success and has been instrumental in making Facebook the behemoth it is today. Ms. Sandberg has Bachelors of Arts and Science from Harvard University and a Masters of Business Administration from Harvard Business School. Sheryl Sandberg joined the Facebook team in 2008 and became the first woman on the board just 4 short years later. She has been instrumental in helping Facebook scale globally, go public, and expand its digital revenue. Sandberg recently penned the bestseller, Lean In, and has used it as a platform to get men and women working together to further gender equality in the home and at work. She has also launched a public service campaign called LeanIn.org with the NBA and WNBA. It's really cool to know that a woman has helped shape and define a social tool that most of us use day in and day out. We at UJ certainly couldn't do the things we do without her work on Facebook. Sheryl Sandberg is a complete and total badass, paving the way for future women in tech. Hats off to you, Ms. Sandberg!
